About Antonia

Antonia M. Villarruel, PhD, RN, FAAN, is the Margaret Bond Simon Dean of Nursing at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing. She is a member of the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) and holds numerous national leadership roles. She is recipient of many awards and honors, including the Sigma Theta Tau International Nurse Researcher Hall of Fame Award. As a bilingual and bicultural nurse researcher and leader, she brings extensive experience with diverse Latino and Mexican populations, with her research focusing on interventions to reduce sexual risk behaviors among their youth; one such program, ¡Cuídate!, has been disseminated nationally. As Dean, she has increased NIH funding, strengthened academic practice partnerships and diversified the School’s faculty and student body with a focus on improving health equity and access for an increasingly diverse patient population.
